Intent
At St Andrew’s our values and faith drive our belief in looking after God’s creation. As Eco Warriors we empower children to understand environmental issues and develop a sense of responsibility for protecting the planet. Through exploration of sustainability, conservation, and climate awareness, pupils will develop the knowledge, skills, and values needed to make environmentally responsible choices and take positive action within their school, community, and the wider world.
Implementation
The Eco School programme is implemented through the active leadership of the Eco Warrior Council, which plays a central role in promoting environmental responsibility across the school. The council is made up of pupil representatives from year 1 to year 6, ensuring pupil voice is valued and all children feel represented.
Eco Warrior Council members meet regularly to plan and review eco‑friendly initiatives. They are taught about key environmental priorities, including recycling, energy conservation, and caring for the school environment, and are supported to share this learning with their peers.
The Eco Warrior Council encourages positive environmental behaviours through assemblies, classroom visits, posters, reminders, and role modelling. Pupils are actively encouraged to:
- Turn off lights, screens, and equipment when rooms are not in use
- Look after the environment, including school grounds, plants, and wildlife areas by using our very own litter picking station made by our Eco Warriors.
Environmental messages are reinforced through everyday school routines and are embedded across the curriculum, particularly in science, geography, and PSHE. This ensures pupils understand why these actions matter and how small changes can make a positive difference.
Impact
The work of the Eco Warrior Council has led to clear, positive changes in pupil behaviour and school culture. Pupils confidently recycle, turn off lights and equipment, and take responsibility for caring for their environment as part of daily routines.
Children understand the importance of these actions and can explain how they help protect the planet. Eco Warriors act as effective role models, promoting pupil leadership, responsibility, and environmental awareness across the school.
St Andrew's have won multiple community awards for their Eco-Warrior work including citizens of the year for their work planting and looking after new saplings and trees on weald common in the village. Each term different class still visit the trees to work on projects based around them and to ensure they are kept healthy and that children have an opportunity to do an act of service for their community.
Why do we have Eco- Warriors?
Our Eco Warriors are a dedicated group of children from Years 1 to 6 who have been chosen for their passion for the planet and their positive attitude. We meet regularly to plan environmental projects, raise awareness, and take action to help our school and community protect the world around us.
