Phonics

Our Phonics leader is Miss Prince. She leads our early reading offer and works very closely with the English team leader, Mrs Day to do this.

"My love of teaching phonics stems from my love of reading and writing stories. When teaching phonics, I love observing children’s lightbulb moments where phonics finally clicks and a world of reading and writing begins. I realise the significance of teaching early phonics and how important it is for the children to develop these lifelong skills.

I like how phonics can allow children to begin to learn more about the world around them. It is important to me to develop children’s love of reading and writing for all children, as phonics supports children in overcoming obstacles, building self-confidence and awareness. By mastering phonics, students can improve their reading accuracy, fluency, and overall comprehension.

Seeing how children progress in their reading and writing is incredible and seeing how they transfer these skills to everything they do through reading and writing makes it worthwhile in my career."

Miss Price - Phonics Leader

Intent

At St Andrew’s our intent for phonics is to ensure all children become confident and enthusiastic readers and writers and can apply the skills learnt to access a wide range of different text types. We aim to produce readers who courageously build on their knowledge of phonics to decode and use new and ambitious vocabulary.

Each child is nurtured, encouraged and challenged to achieve and exceed their goals where they feel safe to ‘have a go’ using their phonic knowledge in an inclusive environment. We develop a love of reading that gives the foundation to all knowledge and the tools to approach future challenges and to inspire others in the community and beyond.
